DescriptionThis course introduces the basic elements of data collection planning, including explanations of data in its most basic forms and the reasons why unbiased data is of value to an organization. The course outlines the steps in obtaining a truly random sample from which to collect data. Once a sample has been obtained, a number of various data collection techniques can be used to record the observations of the data collectors. This course will be useful to anyone who is responsible for the collection of information used in process improvement efforts.
The course length is 15 hours and will include detailed instruction, periodic assessments, and a certificate of completion upon successful review.
Lesson 1: Collecting Data
- Enumerate the reasons for collecting data
- Identify and distinguish types of quantitative data, including nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio data
- Identify considerations to be undertaken in data collection planning
- Identify issues that commonly impact data collection, including collector training and addressing concerns about how collected data may have negative consequences
Lesson 2: Sampling
- Identify the advantages and limitations of obtaining a sample from a larger population
- List ways of obtaining a truly random sample
- Identify how to draw a systematic sample, accounting for recurring characteristics
- Identify how to draw a stratified sample, accounting for differences in the strata by weighting individual stratum
- Evaluate whether or not a sample taken in a given scenario is likely to be representative of the target population
Lesson 3: Data Collection Techniques
- Identify the capabilities and common usage for the technique
- List the steps in developing the tool
- Identify potential biases that must be accounted for when developing and using the technique
- Evaluate what the best data collection technique is for a given scenario
