Join Underwriters Laboratories® for our newly developed and redesigned workshop on Information Technology and Communications Equipment: Designing for Compliance to UL 60950-1 2nd Edition, CAN/CSA-C 22.2 No. 60950-1-07; 2007 and IEC 60950-1 2nd edition; 2005. Understanding the risks and how product safety standards address these risks can better equip you to design your products for compliance and meet international market requirements.

In this two-day workshop we will review product safety from a technical design perspective. Experienced UL instructors will cover a broad range of technical topics from circuits and isolation to over-voltage and acoustic pressure. We will also review design considerations that can help you reduce risk in these various applications. You will learn about other key compliance topics and how UL’s online tools can help you select critical components, international licensing and how compliance is documented in IECEE CB Scheme style reports. Participants will be provided with all the critical information needed to design for compliance to national and international standards widely used in the industry for safety of information technology and communications equipment.

Each participant will be given a copy of the UL 60950-1 2nd Edition Standard ($467 USD value).

Objectives

• Identify the notable differences between the latest versions of the UL and IEC Standards for Safety of Information Technology Equipment (ITE) and their predecessors
• Consider the impact of these revised standards on certification of ITE
• Apply critical design criteria that reduce the risks of fire, electric shock and physical hazards associated with ITE
• Design equipment to provide two levels of protection between the user and hazardous voltages, including the provision of insulation between different circuits
• Use insulation coordination concepts to specify critical clearances, creepage distances and distances through solid insulation
• Identify the requirements for different types of enclosures and internal plastic parts for particular products
• Learn the options and related requirements for connecting equipment to the mains supply, including special requirements for equipment connected to a DC mains supply
• Identify different types of telecommunication and cable distribution system circuits (e.g., TNV), and associated requirements for separation of these circuits from other circuits, protection of equipment from over-voltages due to power line cross and acoustic pressure
• Select critical components using UL online tools
• Design a typical product test plan using UL 60950-1
